Environmental Sustainability

The Environmental Sustainability Thematic Partnership comprises a steering group and a number of working groups, each tasked with a specific area of focus. Initial priorities have been set by the need to deliver the National Indicators outlined in the Local Area Agreement and the make up of the partnership to date reflects this.

It is recognised, however, that the partnership and its priorities are still evolving and, as such, the membership of the partnership will change and additional working groups will need to be set up.  At present, the areas of focus are climate change, waste, housing and highways but it is expected that further environmental objectives will come to the fore once the Sustainable Community Strategy for the borough is finalised.  The role of the Thematic Partnership will be to ensure delivery of these longer term objectives through robust action plans and delivery mechanisms.

A further role of the Thematic Partnership is to support the work of the Area Partnership Boards in tackling local environmental issues and, in turn, receive APB support in locally delivering the aspirations of the Thematic Partnership.

“It’s early days for the Thematic Partnership and, although our immediate focus is on climate change and waste, we know that, as the Sustainable Community Strategy takes shape, there will be other environmental priorities that we will need to address – the natural environment, biodiversity, and wider sustainability issues.  The Thematic Partnership must add value to what is already happening on the ground and must include everyone who can deliver against this agenda".
