Sustainable Community Strategy
Local authorities have a statutory duty to produce a Sustainable Community Strategy for their area to promote economic, environmental and social wellbeing and improve local quality of life. This should set the overall strategic direction and long term vision for the area. Local Authorities are expected to work in partnership with others on the development and delivery of the Sustainable Community Strategy through the Local Strategic Partnership.

Context
Following local government reorganisation, the new Cheshire West and Chester Council came into effect on 1st April 2009. In order to fulfil its statutory duty in relation to the production of a Sustainable Community Strategy, an interim document was produced, drawn from the pre-existing Sustainable Community Strategies of the former authorities.
Cheshire West and Chester Council and West Cheshire Together committed to producing a new Sustainable Community Strategy for the borough during 2009/10. This process began in June 2009 with the presentation of statistical evidence and profiling of issues by topic and area to an informed audience of stakeholders who were tasked with identifying priorities for the future. This was further developed at the inaugural LSP Network event on 20th July 2009 where a wider audience reviewed this work and provided further thoughts on what future priorities should be and how they should be addressed.
This work informed the production of a formal consultation document which was widely available for comment.
Consultation on a new Sustainable Community Strategy for the borough
Following the period of evidence gathering and consideration of future priorities for the Sustainable Community Strategy, a formal period of consultation on the draft Sustainable Community Strategy took place from 11th November 2009 to 13th January 2010. This was carried out jointly with the consultations on the Local Development Framework Core Strategy for West Cheshire and also the Local Transport Plan.
The LSP Network event on 20th November 2009 introduced formal consultation on these three key inter-related strategies for the borough and views were sought on the emerging content of the three documents. Thank you to all those who participated and sent in comments and contributions as part of the consultation process.
Whilst the Sustainable Community Strategy is a partnership document, it required the formal endorsement of Cheshire West and Chester's Full Council and this was obtained on 25th February 2010.
The new Sustainable Community Strategy for West Cheshire "Together we can Aim High" ( PDF 5.51 mb) was launched on 27th April 2010 at the LSP Network event. This key document sets out the vision and commitments for West Cheshire Together ( LSP ) through to 2026 and will provide a framework for guiding and informing the work of the partnership for years to come. Over the coming months, the first steps will be taken in translating the commitments and amitions set out in the document by looking at priority areas and issues and also the good practice we have to build on.
In addition to the full document, a shorter Summary Document ( PDF 3.3 mb)has also been produced.
