Sustainable Community Strategy

Local authorities have a statutory duty to produce a Sustainable Community Strategy for their area to promote economic, environmental and social wellbeing and improve local quality of life.  This should set the overall strategic direction and long term vision for the area.  Local Authorities are expected to work in partnership with others on the development and delivery of the Sustainable Community Strategy through the Local Strategic Partnership.

Context

Following local government reorganisation, the new Cheshire West and Chester Council came into effect on 1st April 2009.  In order to fulfil its statutory duty in relation to the production of a Sustainable Community Strategy, an interim document was produced, drawn from the pre-existing Sustainable Community Strategies of the former authorities.

Cheshire West and Chester Council and West Cheshire Together committed to producing a new Sustainable Community Strategy for the borough during 2009/10.  This process began in June 2009 with the presentation of statistical evidence and profiling of issues by topic and area to an informed audience of stakeholders who were tasked with identifying priorities for the future.  This was further developed at the inaugural LSP Network event on 20th July 2009 where a wider audience reviewed this work and provided further thoughts on what future priorities should be and how they should be addressed.

This work informed the production of a formal consultation document which was widely available for comment.
